SAN DIEGO, August 23, 2024 — It’s been almost three months since we sent out an email and posted an article encouraging schools to get a head start on the new school year by learning about our language services for potential Non-English Speaking and Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing students. How is the new school year here already? Time flies, especially during summer vacation!

As the new school year begins, excitement fills the air. For many students, it’s a time of new friends, learning opportunities, and growth. But for some, like a new student at one of our team member’s San Diego schools, the start of school brings a different set of challenges. This particular student, newly arrived from Europe, speaks no English and currently has no interpreter set up by the school to help navigate daily communication.

Imagine being in their shoes, struggling to understand lessons, unable to communicate with teachers or peers, and feeling isolated and even scared and uncomfortable in a new environment. Without proper language support, students like this can quickly fall behind academically, socially, and emotionally. The importance of providing professional interpretation services cannot be overstated, it’s not just about understanding the words, it’s about ensuring every student feels included, supported, and able to thrive.

Is your school is facing similar challenges?

What will your school do when this scenario comes up?

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of your students.

At Interpreters Unlimited, we specialize in bridging these communication gaps. Our experienced interpreters are ready to assist, ensuring that every student, regardless of language, has access to the education they deserve. We understand the emotional impact of language barriers, and we’re here to help your school create an inclusive environment where every student can succeed.

As the new school year gets started, we are excited to support your institution in providing equitable education opportunities for all students. With over 50 years of experience in language services, we specialize in foreign language interpretation in over 200 languages, American Sign Language (ASL), and document translation, ensuring that language is never a barrier to learning.

SAN DIEGO, August 5, 2024 — As the world has come together for the 2024 Olympics, a global celebration of athleticism and unity, it’s important to recognize the significant role that language and diversity play in fostering an inclusive and harmonious event. The Olympics remains a true representation of global solidarity and mutual respect, with interpretation and translation being an essential part of the games, a glue bringing everyone together.

This year in Paris, France, athletes from over 200 nations have come together to compete at the highest level. This convergence of diverse cultures and languages requires careful planning and the integration of language services to facilitate smooth communication and enhance the overall experience for everyone involved. From athletes and coaches to journalists and spectators, effective communication is vital.

Language is more than just a means of communication, it is a bridge that connects people from different backgrounds and cultures. Language services are instrumental in the Olympics, facilitating interactions between participants from different countries, promoting cultural exchange and mutual understanding. This fosters a sense of unity and respect among diverse groups. Effective communication between athletes, coaches, referees etc. is crucial for performance and a seamless experience. Multilingual interpreters ensure that instructions, strategies, and feedback are accurately conveyed, breaking down those language barriers.

The Olympics are a tremendous spectacle, a melting pot of cultures, attracting media coverage from across the globe. Translators and interpreters work tirelessly to provide real-time translations for press conferences, interviews, and official announcements, ensuring that information is accessible to international audiences. Additionally, with millions of spectators from around the world, multilingual support enhances the overall experience. From ticketing and event schedules to emergency information, language services ensure that all attendees feel welcomed and informed.

At Interpreters Unlimited, we are dedicated to promoting inclusivity and breaking down language barriers. Our team of highly skilled interpreters and translators are proficient in over 200 languages, including American Sign Language (ASL). We provide on-demand and scheduled services, in person, via video or over the phone, to meet the diverse needs of our clients, ensuring that language is never a barrier to participation or enjoyment. Whether it is a major sporting event, a routine doctor visit, a court appearance, day to day interpretation for schools, we cover it all!

Diversity is the heart of the Olympic spirit. It is what makes the event unique and inspiring. Celebrating diversity means recognizing and valuing the contributions of individuals from all walks of life. It is not only important to recognize the athletes, coaches and those who are at the forefront of the games, but also the interpreters and translators who play such an important role. Language services play a crucial role in this celebration by ensuring that everyone, regardless of their linguistic background, can be a part of the Olympic experience.

As the world enjoys the 2024 Olympics, Interpreters Unlimited is committed to supporting this global event by shining a light on the interpreters and translators who largely go unseen and uncredited. We believe that effective communication is the key to unlocking the full potential of diversity and inclusion at the Olympics and beyond. Being a leader in foreign language interpretation and document translation, IU is committed to continue to provide the highest level of language services, and to promote diversity, inclusion and accessibility for all.

SAN DIEGO, February 9, 2022 — Interpreters Unlimited (IU) will be participating in the 10th Annual ALC (Association of Language Companies) Unconference in Orlando, Florida, Feb 9-12, 2022. This year the event is back in person where last year it was 100% virtual. There is also an additional virtual summit 2/16-2/17 for those who would prefer virtual over in person.

The UnConference is not your usual conference, with no keynote speakers or panels arranged, the flow and content of the event is shaped and crafted by the attendees. Their ideas and participation run the show. Conference sessions are usually roundtable discussions among attendees on various topics such as HR/Operations, Advocacy, M&A, RFP’s, Industry Trends, Technology and the ALC itself.

IU VP Shamus Sayed is an ALC board member who holds an important role handling new membership meet and greets and then mentoring at the event as well as year round. Shamus represents IU at the event every year.

The ALC is a U.S. based international trade association, representing businesses that provide translation, interpretation, localization, language testing, and language training services across the globe. They serve the language service industry through advocacy and professional development. You can learn more about the ALC and their events at www.alcus.org.

This year, French is the official language of the Rio games as homage to the victims of the Paris terror attacks. With 99 percent of the population in Brazil are Portuguese speakers, and thousands of international guests, it presents a communication challenge to the Rio Olympic Committee.

Hurdling the Language Barrier

The impoverished socioeconomic status of many Brazilians limits the opportunity to learn and study other languages, as only the wealthy classes have traditionally had access to this kind of education. One way the Committee is addressing these challenges is by offering free English courses to Rio taxi drivers. Learning simple conversational phrases make it easier for tourists and drivers to communicate, and will hopefully contribute to a rise in prosperity for those in the Brazilian service industry during this international event. The classes were online and spanned about four months.

In addition, 8,000 volunteer translators were recruited for the games. The process began in 2014 to recruit qualified linguists to be the “voice of the games.” Interpreters and translators will deliver services in more than 30 languages, some of which include English, Portuguese, French, Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Hungarian, Arabic, Farsi, Thai, Romanian, Amharic, Swahili, Belarusian, Slovak, Turkish, Indonesian (Bahasa), Croatian, Czech, Lithuanian, Polish, Serbian, Urdu, Greek, Finnish and Filipino.

The Olympic interpreters will provide consecutive and simultaneous language services to the 10,000+ athletes in attendance. Other duties include interpreting for guest services, medical purposes, transportation, press conferences, event announcements and more. Interpreters are provided with uniforms, meals, transportation, and a certificate of participation from the Rio Olympic committee.

The Rio Summer Olympic Games begin August 5 and will conclude August 21. Forty-two sports will be featured and for the first time in 112 years, golf is making an appearance. This year’s Olympiad is hosted for first time in South America and will feature 306 tournaments, 136 medals for women, 161 medals for men and nine mixed medals.

ASL in the Arts: San Diego International Fringe Festival 2016

This June, get ready for a one-of-a-kind performance, Gifts from my Deaf Father, by Windell (Wink) Smith at this year’s International Fringe Festival, June 27-July 3 at the Spreckels building in downtown San Diego. Performed entirely in American Sign Language (ASL) and interpreted to spoken English, Wink’s tale of his upbringing as a child of deaf parents (CODA) is set to capture the hearts, minds and spirit of audiences. Tickets start at 12 dollars and are on sale now.

According to the article Deaf Parents and Their Hearing Children*, children who can hear, but whose parents are Deaf, are both bilingual and bicultural. Some experts have feared that the cultural difference or fragile development of the child psyche may cause delayed language development in hearing children. However, children who are exposed to both the signing of ASL and grammar of English in fact do just fine.

On the other hand, hearing children who are not regularly exposed to verbal communication may be at risk of delayed spoken language development. In these circumstances play groups, time spent with hearing relatives, after school programs and the like are suggested to increase the child’s exposure, and compensate for the potential delayed speech acquisition rate.

Interestingly, the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders’ statistics report that more than 90% of deaf children are born to hearing parents, making the experience of the CODA particularly unique. See more statistics here.

Wink’s one-man show will highlight the emotion, struggle and joy he went through as a child entering the hearing world for the first time in kindergarten. The show is scheduled five times through the duration of the festival and is welcome to ASL and hearing audiences.

The San Diego International Fringe Festival is an international arts festival in which artists from across the United States and world gather to perform their craft, collaborate with others artists and promote the arts. The Festival is a project of Contact Arts, a 501(c) 3 nonprofit and is associated with the Actors Alliance of San Diego.

The phrase translation services probably conjure up a certain image in your mind. Like many people, I’d guess that you will think of a large assembly like the United Nations where there are people from different countries speaking dozens of languages. You’d not be wrong with this image. The United Nations assembly is an excellent example of how important simultaneous translation services are.

So what are simultaneous translation services? Here’s a description from the European commission, another body where simultaneous translation is vitally important. The interpreter sits in a soundproof room and,

“The speaker in the meeting room speaks into a microphone, the interpreter receives the sound through a headset and renders the message into a microphone almost simultaneously. The delegate in the meeting room selects the relevant channel to hear the interpretation in the language of his/her choice.”

Simultaneous translation is not a science. It’s very much an art. Translators must be able to listen to what a speaker is saying and, for all practical purposes, translate immediately what is being said into another language. This is a very demanding, highly skilled job. You can imagine in assemblies like the United Nations, accuracy is all important. But of course with any act of translation there is room for subjective interpretation. It’s difficult to eliminate this.

I say that translation is for all practical purposes immediate. To be technically accurate translation cannot be simultaneous and certainly cannot be immediate. There has to be some delay. The translator has to hear what is said and only when the general meaning of the sentence is understood can she start to translate. Some sentences – especially those where there is a large gap between the subject and verb – only make sense when the sentence is concluded. This gives an idea of just how challenging it is to be a simultaneous translator.

It’s not just political assemblies that will use simultaneous translation services. You are likely to find translators employed at industrial conferences, international sales and training seminars, trade shows and legal conferences. Events like these could not run without simultaneous translation services. As uniVerse Language Solutions explains,

“In every case, the use of simultaneous interpreters is pivotal to the success of the event, since among all the specific goals on the agenda, one of the prime objectives is to achieve an effective and accurate communication.”

In a world where there are hundreds of different languages, simultaneous translation services will always be important.

Many companies and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) tend to have a hard time finding fluent Spanish translators for events. Many times they have to settle for who is available and the cost of hiring these translators is far in excess of what a regular translator would cost. Luckily, there are a few places that you can find great Spanish translation services online. The problem arises in choosing the good ones so you don’t get burned with the ones that are cut-rate and unskilled in their trade. Here we look at a few things that you should look at to ensure that you’re getting a Spanish translator that’s both skilled and eloquent.

Background

Many Spanish translators are either native speakers that have learned English or English speakers that have branched out their knowledge to include Spanish. Understanding the background of your translator helps to figure out if your translator would work well with your event. Translatorsbase.com says,

“Strongly consider against someone who has not studied the field of Spanish translations.”

Translation itself is a tricky job and when someone who hasn’t had much experience in the field attempts it, the results can end up in a lot of muddled ideas being lost mid-way. A good translator ensures that nothing is lost in translation, although professional translators know that not every detail can be successfully translated across a language barrier.

Underestimating the Complexity

According to All-Translations, “Translation is a very complicated process which has to consider many factors – the genre and the style of the original text, the translator’s competence, the timeline allocated to the project and many more.”

There is a trap many event planners fall into when it comes to sourcing a translator and that is the idea that translation is the same as conversion from one language to another. Many times, when you simply convert words from one language to another the essence of the words is lost. Translators bridge that gap by converting the words in their correct context.

Spanish translation is a difficult job. A great translator must be quick-witted and able to think of the fly to ensure that his or her translations maintain the truth of the words while maintaining the essence of the communication. It is far more complicated than most people give translators credit for. Vocabulary and slang usage must constantly be updated to fit the current standards. Getting a good translator requires a lot of effort on behalf of the event planners to ensure that the person they hire is up to the task.
