Today we’d like to introduce you to Sayed Ali.

Sayed, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.

After immigrating from India and earning an electronic engineering degree, I became a design engineer for a company owned by the conglomerate International Telephone & Telegraph. I rose quickly to director of operations and helped save the company. With orders for components topping 1500 units/day, production was half of that. I met with 1200 employees, organized a detailed study and flow chart of every fix, and had them done NOW. The contributions of the many outweigh those of one leader.

I left to begin Creative Host Services (CHS), a groundbreaking bakery-deli concept that led to a quick acquisition. For my second venture, I chose airport concessions. Millions of dollars were needed to enter this highly competitive market, so I defied business logic and went public right away. In 2006, with $186 million in sales, the company was acquired. With each venture, I was the groundbreaker: I was the first to champion healthful ingredients in bakeries and delis and to franchise the concept (business #1); the first to introduce high-end services to local airports (business #2); the first to service those in danger interpretation– and translation-wise: emergency room doctors; border patrol; police. For me, 4 a.m. is like any workday hour.

In 2007, I acquired my current business, Interpreters Unlimited, and successfully expanded the company nationwide. I created IU Group, the parent company which is now comprised of Interpreters Unlimited and four other companies that I acquired in different territories throughout the US under its umbrella. I continue to grow the business through strategic marketing and operations efforts and by implementing new technologies into the business model.

One new technological venture is the new Interpreter Marketplace smartphone app that was just launched, an affiliate to IU. It is an app that matches foreign language and American Sign Language interpreters with the limited English speakers and Deaf individuals who require their services on a daily basis. It is available for use for both personal reasons from doctor appointments to immigration hearings, weddings, etc. to company use by hospitals and schools, corporations, etc.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

I pride myself in calmly making high-risk decisions that grow companies so that employees grow, too. I have grown IU from $2 million in sales in 2007 to projected sales of $16 million in 2020. When I decided to acquire IU, financing was difficult; the market had crashed; and California, IU’s new home base, had a budget crisis. For eight months, IU wasn’t paid for critical services to the many government agencies IU served. I borrowed from a factor at exorbitant interest rates and services continued uninterrupted. We provide a very essential service which is needed in hospitals, in family situations where women are being battered, a child is being taken into custody. We couldn’t say no. With a family and two young sons, it wasn’t easy.

We are currently experiencing a challenge with the new AB5 ruling in the State of California, which directly impacts our company and business model along with so many others like Uber and Lyft, which rely on independent contractors to deliver services throughout the state. I have been personally working with other companies and industry leaders as well as legislators firsthand to try to change the ruling which will negatively affect so many companies, workers and individuals who depend on these services in our state daily.

Another challenge arose with technology, creating the new affiliate app Interpreter Marketplace, issues would come up in development and testing, and we saw delays, but we fine-tuned it and just launched it to the San Diego County public. When obstacles arise, I try to stay fearless and solution minded.

Interpreters Unlimited – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

Interpreters Unlimited provides professional language interpretation including American Sign Language, written translation and non-emergency medical transportation services to businesses throughout the United States.

For IU’s most popular service, in-person interpreting, we contract linguists for on-site interpretation appointments for our government, healthcare, legal and corporate clients. Examples of the types of appointments include depositions, meetings, medical appointments, parent/teacher conferences, and events.

IU’s other services include video interpretation, telephone interpretations, document translation and non-emergency medical transportation which are fueled by client demand. Right now, during the Coronavirus pandemic, we are seeing more of a need for these services and are glad that we are able to provide remote interpreting to those who require it. Document translation is also really important and in high demand right now, companies need to be able to communicate their Coronavirus updates and operation information to their Non-English Speaking communities in their own language quickly.

Currently, IU’s national presence serves all major industries in 200 foreign languages and American Sign Language. IU’s comprehensive service offering eliminates language barriers to provide effective communication and understanding between English speakers and those with limited English proficiency and/or who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing.

Beyond IU, Interpreter Marketplace is the new interpreting app which is an IU affiliate. It allows businesses and individuals to book foreign language and American Sign Language interpreters for any need they may have right on their smartphone. Customers can browse interpreters by cost, location, bios and ratings and choose the one that best fits their needs. It is available for use for personal reasons from medical appointments to court hearings, parent-teacher meetings, etc. to company use by healthcare facilities and school districts, large and small corporations in any industry, etc.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?

I am proud to have come from humble beginnings and have built everything I have from the ground up. In building my companies, I sought out assistance from the SBA who provided loans which were helpful in financing acquisitions and growth. Fellow entrepreneurs and business owners have been very supportive and there has been a mutually beneficial relationship between us. Of course, all of my team members and staff have made a difference through the years, we do this as a team and they are all greatly appreciated. And family, family has always been the #1 supporter throughout my entrepreneurial career.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shamus Sayed.

Shamus, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

I’m the middle of 3 kids and been in San Diego since 1979. Grew up in Poway, having graduated Poway High School in 1995. Ultimately graduated UC San Diego with a B.S. in Biology and pre-med for about 15 minutes. Had a job waiting for me at a biotech company the Monday after commencement. Climbed my way through and despite the passion for the sciences, I had a series of bad bosses and wanted to leave the corporate world. Parallel, my father had started a company in the late 80s, took it public in the late 90s, and sold it in the mid-2000s. He too was in a transitional state.

In 2007, over the course of 30 days, I got married, left my corporate job and took a 60% pay reduction as we closed the acquisition of Interpreters Unlimited (IU).

Over the course of 11 years, IU provides language services (onsite interpretation, document translation, telephone and video interpretation) in about 35 states in the healthcare, government, academic and corporate verticals. We are blessed now being one of the largest in the industry space. Over the last few years, we’ve been blessed to being recognized as one of San Diego’s largest privately held companies, INC 5000 ranked for 4 consecutive years, awarded by the SBA for two consecutive years, and Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Semi-Finalists for two consecutive years.

Outside of IU, I sit on 3 SDPD Advisory Boards and former president of the FBI Citizens Academy Alumni Association. And, this year a congressional candidate for California’s 50th district.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?

It’s a matter of perspective. If you love what you do, this isn’t considered “work”. Sure, we’ve had our cash flow struggles, lack of payment from the State of CA when the budget wasn’t approved, employee issues, regulation challenges… I can keep going, but the point here is that its par for the course. Each day is different but as long as there are more good days, I’m in a good place.

Please tell us about Interpreters Unlimited.

Interpreters Unlimited (IU) has been in business since 1970 but under our ownership since 2007. We are a matchmaker, i.e., we match clients who are having challenges communicating with their patients/clients with linguists in nearly 200 languages.

Though we offer services over the phone and video, what we are known for is providing an onsite interpreter. IU’s proprietary software and a network of nearly 10,000 independently contracted linguists matches clients with highly qualified/vetted linguists in nearly 200 languages throughout the country.

We’re proud of our ability to create a bridge between two people. The inability to effectively communicate has an adverse impact in every vertical in which we serve. The cost of our services is small relative to the costs of NOT using our service.

We are blessed with an amazing internal team who make this ability to serve possible. As a company, our focus is our clients – period. As owners, our focus is shared with our team and clients. A joint, equal priority is necessary.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?

This is a scary notion. Nothing.

Our experiences are our blessings. Though we may not see these as blessings at times. A wise person said rejection is God’s protection.

If we had done things differently, I wouldn’t have learned the lessons I know now.

A new bill has been introduced in Florida requiring officials to use certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters for all televised emergency briefings. The bill requires these ASL interpreters to be certified by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (FRID).

This bill was drafted after an interpreter signed gibberish during a televised Hurricane Irma warning in Manatee County, leaving the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community confused and unable to effectively respond to the crisis. The “interpreter” reportedly warned the populace about pizza and bears but ignored vital information about evacuations and safety. Florida Representative Richard Stark stated the incident was “‘anything but funny’ for hearing-impaired residents who depend on that information to stay safe in times of crisis.”

This is not the first situation where televised interpretations were botched. In 2013, the Deaf community was (rightfully) outraged when a “fake” interpreter made up signs during President Obama’s eulogy at Nelson Mandela’s memorial service. Incidents such as these disenfranchise the Deaf community by robbing them of their right to know what is going on in their communities and especially during urgent situations.

The introduction of Florida’s new bill aims to ensure quality interpretation is a step in the right direction, but is it enough? Currently, the bill will only require this certification in situations involving emergency briefings for the public. However, best practices in the language services community indicate that using certified interpreters in the medical, legal, and various other fields result in the most accurate and helpful interpretations. Providing accessible communication to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in all situations is necessary and possible with the right steps.

About RID Certification

RID Certification is often required of ASL interpreters in certain circumstances, such as emergency situations, and within the medical and legal fields. Certification requires certain standards of conduct which ensure professional and ethical practices. According to the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, a certified deaf interpreter undergoes “specialized training involving experience in the use of gesture, mime, props, drawings, and other tools to enhance communication.” This training allows for highly accurate interpretations in situations where important information is being relayed.

Why a Qualified Interpreter is Necessary

A qualified interpreter is one who is accustomed with the Deaf community’s culture, customs, and interests. They also meet all the ADA requirements, including necessary specialized vocabulary and the ability to interpret effectively. Regardless of RID Certification, an interpreter should be qualified to meet the needs of the Deaf community.

How Do I Find a Qualified ASL Interpreter?

Finding a qualified sign language interpreter is not as hard as it may seem. Interpreters Unlimited recruits certified and highly qualified ASL interpreters to meet your interpreting needs. Accessible Communication for the Deaf (ACD), the Sign Language Services Division of IU Group, offers professional ASL interpretation services for a variety of businesses nationwide.
“The reality is we are never going to have enough qualified interpreters in enough languages for every courtroom that needs them at the time they need them.”District Court of Appeal Justice, Terrence L. Bruiniers
With more than 220 languages spoken in California, but only 1,900 court interpreters representing a small percentage of those languages, the state continues to fall short in providing legal language services to limited English speakers. To comply with federal law, the state’s goal is to provide California court interpreters for all criminal and civil cases, as noted by District Court of Appeal Justice, Terrence L. Bruiniers in this article by the LA Times. Bruiniers also said that “the reality is we are never going to have enough qualified interpreters in enough languages for every courtroom that needs them at the time they need them.” (Dolan, 2017).

While 1,900 interpreters is impressive, recruiting on-site interpreters as employees is a cumbersome and costly business, and ultimately underserves speakers of less common languages such as Cambodian, Khmer, Japanese, Malayalam, Hmong, Lao, Mixteco, and other exotic languages. To combat the issue, the Judicial Council of California launched a pilot video remote interpretation (VRI) project in July to compare technology from two vendors in the Superior Courts of Merced, Sacramento and Ventura. At the end of the six-month project, the Courts, Council and vendors are to determine statewide criteria for VRI technology, based on the effectiveness of the technology and participant feedback.

According to Slator, the vendors, (Connected Justice and Paras and Associates) both use Cisco equipment. In fact, Connected Justice is a branded Cisco platform! This leads to the question of whether the vendor selection will monopolize the market in the future.

Solution 1: Increase Competition, Increase Suppliers, Increase Coverage

Video Remote Interpretation

Increasing competition during the procurement process will increase vendor selection and increase interpreter coverage statewide.

In the past, the VRI interpreting in California was limited to court-certified American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters. This practice limits the number of interpreters available and may increase the risk of violating the American Disability Act and the U.S. Civil Rights Act of 1964, in the event a court-certified ASL interpreter is not available.

Suppliers, such as Stratus Video, provide nationally certified sign language interpreters and professionally qualified foreign language interpreters to perform VRI services. Companies like Stratus increase the pool of qualified interpreters available for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing population, as well as LEP persons.

Solution 2: Improve Communication Before and After Court

Telephone Interpretation

While VRI interpretation is favored over telephone interpreting services, some counties are implementing this service. It is cost-effective, secure and provides equal access to the California Courts.

In addition to using legal interpreters for civil and criminal hearings, the courts are further challenged with providing language services for various court appointed services, programs, and any pertaining legal information, from substance abuse courses to where to pay for a parking ticket.

In order to ameliorate the burden on the court system, over-the phone interpretation services can be implemented for the court’s automated messaging system. This type of telephone interpretation directs the caller (non-English speaker) to a live interpreter or recorded message (jury duty, holiday closings, etc.), effectively communicating everything they need before and after their court obligation.

California Court Interpreter Certification Process

At present, there is no standardized national accredited certification for court interpretation. States have various requirements and may only represent some languages. In California, court interpreter certification exams are only offered in American Sign Language, Arabic, Eastern Armenian, Cantonese, Farsi, Khmer, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese. People who are fluent in other languages may apply for the registered court interpreters test.

Under the provisional qualification in the “language access plan”, California courts can outsource legal language services to language services providers (LSP). This method can save department time, cut labor costs, reduce expenses and bring the courts in compliance with federal law.

Solution 3: Outsource to Become in Compliance

Working with an LSP is extremely beneficial because these companies already have a network of professionally trained and qualified linguists contracted to perform services for clients. As you can see below, the only difference in credentials is certification through the state.

Many LSPs meet California’s requirements, not only under the provisional qualifications but for all legal language services. This includes written translations of signage, forms, applications, and other documents.

Moving forward, if state and county court systems considered outsourcing via a request for proposal (RFP) that includes on-site, telephone, VRI, ASL and document translation services, they could save valuable time and resources and be closer to achieving compliance with the federal government.

Conclusion

“This is not the kind of challenge you can simply meet in three years and then declare victory.” – Supreme Court Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuellar (Dolan, 2017)

As California’s court interpreter shortage continues to develop, the state should consider including these provisional qualifications as acceptable standards for the RFP process. As the most diverse state in the union, it is time to provide equal access for all.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro when it comes to working with foreign language interpreters, or if it’s something you’re not familiar with, these 10 tips will help you before, during and after an on-site interpretation appointment.

Before the Appointment

Request an interpreter who is the same gender and age, with a similar background to the person who is not English proficient. Depending on the circumstances of a medical appointment or legal matter, the person may feel more comfortable communicating with someone who has a similar background to them. Also, be sure to know if a consecutive or simultaneous interpreter is needed.

Allow enough time for the interpretation to take place. Note that the time will be close to double the time of a regular appointment or consultation. This is because, during consecutive interpretation, the limited English proficient (LEP) person speaks, followed by the interpreter.

Speak with your interpreter before the appointment begins about any questions you may have. Discuss any protocols that may arise during the appointment. It’s also a good idea for the interpreter to explain to the non-English speaker his/her role during the appointment and to answer any questions that person may have before it begins.

Be culturally aware of the differences between the languages of all speakers. Before the interpretation process begins, ask the interpreter about common religious, cultural and social class issues that may arise during the session. Many times, people from tight-knit communities may not feel comfortable speaking about issues when someone from a different social class is present. To be sure valuable information is not held back during the conversation, discuss this with the interpreter before the session begins.

During the Appointment

Speak at a regular pace and tone for the interpreter to accurately convey what is said. Remember to speak in your normal speaking voice and avoid changing your thoughts or the meaning of what you’re saying mid-sentence.

Avoid industry jargon and technical terms during an appointment where an interpreter is present. Dialogue of this nature may at times be difficult for the interpreter to interpret, although the concept may be understood.

Speak directly to the person with limited English proficiency or who is Deaf. The interpreter in the room is a medium to communicate what is said between parties. Position the interpreter between yourself and the LEP patient or client the interpreter is interpreting for. Remember that what the interpreter is saying is not his/her own words.

Do not ask the interpreter any questions or comments directed towards the interpreter. Sign language and foreign language interpreters are trained to not answer these questions during the session. Doing so can confuse the person they are interpreting for.

Remember that everything you say during the appointment will be interpreted. Don’t say or ask anything that you do not what the limited English proficient person to hear.

Be conscious of body language. During the appointment, be aware of the body language you and your client or patient are using during in-person appointments. Face each other and make eye contact throughout the conversation.

After the Appointment

When the appointment is over, the interpreter typically is not involved in follow-up procedures and does not provide reporting of any kind. If you feel the appointment went well, it’s always recommended to thank the interpreter before they leave. If you particularly enjoyed the experience with a specific interpreter, it’s O.K. to request the same person again. This helps to build a relationship and trust between the interpreter and non-English speaker (s) and/or Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals. However, keep in mind that requests cannot always be guaranteed. This is because language service providers schedule interpreters based on their availability, location and/or industry specialization.

Getting to Know the Deaf Community

When we hear and think about the Deaf community, we must remember that’s exactly what it is—a community. Like any community, there are “do’s” and “don’ts” of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. There are cultural differences, customs, and interests that are common to one group of individuals versus another. If you’ve never worked with American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the Deaf community. Understanding the expectations of the community and the interpreter’s duties and expectations will enhance the communication process.

Here are a few tips from our Director of Sign Language Services, Lisa Campbell to keep in mind next time you need an ASL Interpreter

DID YOU KNOW…

About 30% of spoken English is visible on the lips! –Many Deaf people are skilled lip readers, but most are not. This is because the speech sounds of English have identical mouth movements, making it hard to decipher what is spoken.

American Sign Language is not universal. Every language has its own sign language and some even have regional dialects!

ASL is very expressive and often misunderstood as the Deaf person yelling, but that’s not necessarily the case.

WHEN AN ASL INTERPRETER IS PRESENT…

Ask the Deaf person their preferred mode of communication. Don’t assume ASL or English Sign Language is the standard.

Do speak directly to the Deaf person, not the interpreter. Do not yell at the Deaf person-they will not hear you!

Do speak at a normal pace and tone for the interpreter.

Interpreters typically interpret in the first person. Understand that the interpreter is voicing the words of the Deaf person and not their own.

Don’t address or ask questions to the interpreter while they’re interpreting. They cannot respond during the interpretation process because they are trained to remain neutral and do not interject their opinions.

Unbeknownst to some, foreign language services play a large role in political campaigns and elections. As millions of Americans rush to the polls on Election Day, many will take advantage of mandated language services. It’s one thing to complete the grueling process of obtaining citizenship. Understanding how to vote, deciphering the forms and ballots is confusing enough for English speakers, so we can only imagine what it’s like for our limited English proficient neighbors.

According to a 2014 report, the limited English proficiency population rose by 80% between 1990 and 2010 and today, more than 25 million Americans are LEP. The Voting Rights Act requires states to provide interpretation and written translation services when five percent or more of a given population is LEP.

Such language services are from the moment an individual registers to vote, all the way up to Election Day. Translation of registration forms, brochures and ballots ensure the LEP understands the proper voting procedures, polling place information, candidate information, etc.

State Mandated Language Services for Elections

In addition to the federal Voting Rights Act, some states (and New York City) implemented regulations that are enforced alongside the national laws:

Arizona
Bilingual poll workers are recruited and trained for on-site interpretation services.

California
Translation services help the three percent or more of voting-age citizens who do not possess the skills and comprehension needed to effectively vote on their own.

Colorado
Language services (written and oral) are required when three percent or more of the population in a geographic region are LEP.

New Jersey
Document translation is required when 10 percent or more of the population of registered voters speak Spanish

New York City
This year, Mayor Bill de Blasio expanded voting access to include a variety of languages, including Russian, Urdu, Haitian Creole, French and Arabic. The new voter registration forms are now accessible for 80 percent of New York City’s LEP population.

All of these efforts play a crucial role in the country’s election process at the state, local and federal levels. Without qualified interpreters and translators, millions of Americans wouldn’t have the opportunity to properly exercise their right to vote. In 2004, it was found that these services had a direct impact on voter participation in San Diego County, California; voter registration among Filipino and Latinos increased by 20 percent and 40 percent among Vietnamese Americans.

Campaigning

Each election, we see more concentrated efforts to mend the language barriers and boost communication during campaigns. Of course traditional methods like print media, television and radio ads, and telephone calls are essential to reach voters. However, in 2008, President Obama became the first presidential candidate to actively campaign on social media, expanding opportunities for language services. Today, social media is a top channel in driving awareness and communications to the American people by all political parties.

As diverse as the United States is, reaching all eligible voters is challenging. With the right rhetoric and strategy, candidates strive to win the votes of all eligible voters. Using localized (translated) websites, campaign managers are able to target specific regions, collect and solicit donations, send highly specialized messages and monitor approval ratings between each region.

This year, French is the official language of the Rio games as homage to the victims of the Paris terror attacks. With 99 percent of the population in Brazil are Portuguese speakers, and thousands of international guests, it presents a communication challenge to the Rio Olympic Committee.

Hurdling the Language Barrier

The impoverished socioeconomic status of many Brazilians limits the opportunity to learn and study other languages, as only the wealthy classes have traditionally had access to this kind of education. One way the Committee is addressing these challenges is by offering free English courses to Rio taxi drivers. Learning simple conversational phrases make it easier for tourists and drivers to communicate, and will hopefully contribute to a rise in prosperity for those in the Brazilian service industry during this international event. The classes were online and spanned about four months.

In addition, 8,000 volunteer translators were recruited for the games. The process began in 2014 to recruit qualified linguists to be the “voice of the games.” Interpreters and translators will deliver services in more than 30 languages, some of which include English, Portuguese, French, Russian, Spanish, Mandarin, Cantonese, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Hungarian, Arabic, Farsi, Thai, Romanian, Amharic, Swahili, Belarusian, Slovak, Turkish, Indonesian (Bahasa), Croatian, Czech, Lithuanian, Polish, Serbian, Urdu, Greek, Finnish and Filipino.

The Olympic interpreters will provide consecutive and simultaneous language services to the 10,000+ athletes in attendance. Other duties include interpreting for guest services, medical purposes, transportation, press conferences, event announcements and more. Interpreters are provided with uniforms, meals, transportation, and a certificate of participation from the Rio Olympic committee.

The Rio Summer Olympic Games begin August 5 and will conclude August 21. Forty-two sports will be featured and for the first time in 112 years, golf is making an appearance. This year’s Olympiad is hosted for first time in South America and will feature 306 tournaments, 136 medals for women, 161 medals for men and nine mixed medals.

Professional interpreter, O.W.K. Corrects Dear Abby’s Advice from December Column

Today’s Dear Abby column features a reader’s response to her December 27, 2015 column, “An International Educator.” In case you haven’t read it here’s the synopsis:

Back in December, a teacher asked Ms. Van Buren what to do during a parent-teacher conference which requires the use of a language interpreter. Her response to keep eye contact may seem like an appropriate response to some, but to a professional interpreter, it most certainly is not.

While Ms. Van Buren’s response is in line with today’s socially accepted etiquette standards, the reality is that it is not professional in this context. In O.W.K.’s letter indicates instead the industry standard, writing “Persons being interpreted for do not need to look at the interpreter while facilitating their communication.”

O.W.K. also points out the fact that the term “translator” and “translation” were incorrectly used in the original December letter and response in question. In that correspondence, variations of the word “translation” are used when, in fact, translation is the written process of converting text from one language to another.

Interpretation is the correct term, as pointed out by O.W.K, since it indicates a verbal exchange Even though there may be three people present during an interpretation appointment, the conversation is really only between two people. A professionally trained interpreter is an impartial party whose only role is to facilitate communication.

O.W.K. is absolutely right when he/she wrote, “Just knowing two languages does not guarantee that someone is capable of doing accurate interpretations.” In addition to language fluency, interpreters must also be fluent in different dialects and knowledgeable of the accompanying cultures. For example, many of the Chinese and southeast Asian languages are tone languages, in that, a word spoken in a high pitch has a different meaning than the same word spoken in a softer pitch. Therefore, while it may seem that anyone who can speak the language is competent, there are in fact broader dialectical and cultural nuances that professional interpreters are tested on and taught through advanced training.

A professional interpreter will be better able to negotiate cultural differences between a foreign language speaker and an English speaker. This may include knowing proper modes of addressing different people, which can include everything from choosing appropriate titles for individuals (to indicate gender, status, or education) to the use of informal vs. formal registers of language. In addition, professional interpreters have training in how to navigate cultural specifics in a variety of circumstances; for instance, explaining a hospital procedure (which may include delicate, private information) will be approached differently than an informal parent-teacher meeting. These aspects of professional training allow for the communicative event to take place in a clear, understandable manner.

Well, Dear Abby, there you have it. The nuances of interpretation versus translation have been explained, and there are no hard feelings! We know you’ll use this information to brighten a future reader’s day.

As the United States grows increasingly more diverse in linguistics and in culture, it is becoming more important than ever that hospitals and medical facilities provide proficient, qualified medical translation services, life science translators and hospital interpreters in order to ensure delivery of the best healthcare for patients.

Any lack in interpretation skills can mean disaster for patients – relying on non-professionals to bridge language barriers can increase the risk of wrong procedures, diagnosis misunderstandings, medication errors, readmission’s and more. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, 9% of the population in the U.S. is at risk because of language barriers. And 9% is too many. It has been shown that the most common problems due to a lack of interpreters is a lack of informed consent and medication errors.

Friends and Family Members

What about patients’ family members and friends? Most organizations advise against using loved ones on grounds that they can unintentionally do more harm than good. For one, family members and friends may not be familiar with the medical terminology in one or both languages. Second, emotions are involved when an impartial third-party hospital interpreter is not used.

In one documented case as stated in Modern Healthcare, a clinician communicated in French to a patient who spoke only Creole. In French, “estomac” means “stomach; in Creole, the similar-sounding “lestomak” can refer to the chest. Using no interpreter or an under-qualified interpreter can lead to a procedure on the wrong organ or body part – a potentially life-threatening error might ensue.

Contracting Qualified Hospital Interpreters

Many hospitals and medical facilities contract with companies that provide life science translators and medical translation services as well as hospital interpreters. Most hospitals now have established at minimum phone-based interpretation services, and it’s common for facilities in large urban areas to have comprehensive, in-house interpretation and translation professionals available.

The availability of interpreters in medical facilities is crucial to maintain an efficient and safe operation for hospital staff and patients alike. A lack of available interpreters can mean minutes or hours of delays for staff members as they wait for a professional to arrive or as they try to find a qualified professional. Time is often of the essence in medical settings, and for the well-being of patients and staff, the Joint Commission requires hospitals to provide professional interpretation services to every patient who needs them.
