SAN DIEGO, February 17, 2022 — Did you catch Super Bowl LVI on Sunday? Did you catch the football team captains from the California School for the Deaf in Riverside joining the Rams and Bengals captains for the coin toss? The Riverside football players, Trevin Adams, Christian Jimenez, Jory Valencia and Enos Zornoza, were invited by the NFL to stand with the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals captains in recognition of their groundbreaking season where the all Deaf team went 12-1 last fall, with their only loss coming in the Division 2 Final. Some nice recognition from the NFL. Congrats!

Some more recognition and positive language news coming out of the Super Bowl. The highly anticipated and much talked about half time show led by hip hop stars Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem Kendrick Lamar and Mary J. Blige also had another significant addition to the group. For the first time in Super Bowl history, two of the halftime performers were Deaf. Deaf stars Warren “Wawa” Snipe and Sean Forbes were chosen by Dr. Dre to perform ASL along side all of the artists. Wawa and Forbes used their hands, body and facial expressions to perform exciting interpretations of the songs in American Sign Language as the artists sang on stage making for an inclusive and accessible show.

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., March 9, 2020 – Coronavirus COVID-19 Update.

With the Coronavirus COVID-19 making the news throughout the United States, the IU Group of Companies (Interpreters Unlimited, IU GlobeLink, Accessible Communication for the Deaf (ACD), Albors & Alnet, and Arkansas Spanish Interpreters & Translators (ASIT)) wanted to provide some useful information for those with concerns about the virus. Though the chances of contracting COVID-19 are presently low, we want to make sure we provide the public with the latest information to help keep you safe.

The following are precautions that are taken, and are to be taken, by the independently contracted interpreters who provide their services with us, as well as all IU team members.

It is recommended that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) care guidelines are followed to prevent the spread of most illnesses, including the Coronavirus.

Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.

Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

Stay home when you are sick.

Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask. They should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others and by medical personnel.

If you or someone close to you has a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor or hospital in advance and follow any instructions or recommendations that they provide.

For additional information you can visit the CDC special coronavirus page which is updated as new information becomes available.

Introducing Interpreter Marketplace – A new smart phone app that brings on-site foreign language interpreters and American Sign Language interpreters right to you. Launching in San Diego, California to start, it is the ultimate platform for individuals and businesses to find the right interpreter to meet their language needs.

Clients can log in to the app and browse local interpreter pricing, ratings and backgrounds, choosing the interpreter that best fits their needs. Freelance, independently contracted interpreters can log in to the app on their own schedule, determine their own rates and decide what appointments to accept. The client chooses when and where the appointment is to take place and the interpreter decides if they would like to accept the appointment based on the details provided. The control of the appointment is in the hands of the customer and the interpreter.

The app is designed to aid in effectively facilitating communication for limited English speakers or those who are Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing. It can create opportunities for independently contracted interpreters and fill a need of those who rely on language services to function day to day. A departure from interpretation/translation apps using only artificial intelligence, Interpreter Marketplace provides actual intelligence by engaging professional linguists for on-site interpreting, person to person.

From personal use for weddings, immigration hearings, court cases or doctor appointments, to professional use for law firms, schools, government agencies, insurance companies, healthcare and everything in between, the app serves those who need an interpreter, helping to facilitate communication between diverse parties. The app has just launched in San Diego, California for iOS and Android phones.

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., November 5, 2019 – American Sign Language on The Walking Dead

One of the most popular shows on television today, The Walking Dead* *(Warning: possible spoilers and content and language not suitable for everyone in the link), is bringing inclusion to the tv screens of millions of viewers every week. Last year, during season 9, they introduced Deaf actress Lauren Ridloff as their first Deaf character who communicates in American Sign Language on the show. Alongside Ridloff is actress Angel Theory, playing her sister Kelly, who is Hard of Hearing. Typically, characters on the show are based on their original comic book counterpart, however, casting these characters as Deaf and Hard of Hearing are a complete change, and one of great inclusion.

If you are a fan of the show, or even familiar with it in the slightest, you know that any character can be lost at any given moment. The zombie apocalypse environment is not one that is easily navigated and survived. Having Ridloff and Theory on the show, surviving and thriving now in Season 10, projects their strength and resilience as characters, and you could say mirrors the strength and resilience of those in the real world who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. It is great to have them included on such a popular show, bringing so much attention and awareness to the topic and culture.

Sunday night’s episode opened with the entire first scene focused on Kelly and her hearing loss.* *(Warning: possible spoilers and content and language not suitable for everyone in the link) She was tracking an animal through the forest where you hear the sounds of the wild, birds chirping, leaves rustling, and then they close up on Kelly’s face and the sound goes out. They brought her point of view to the viewer. There was some ringing and muffled sound, and you realize that she is having more difficulty hearing. (In a prior episode Kelly tells her sister Connie that she thinks her hearing is getting worse and she is having difficulty dealing with it, which is actually happening to the actress in her real life.* *(Warning: possible spoilers and content and language not suitable for everyone in the link) Connie tells her that she will help her through it and that their hearing impairment is a super power and not a disability, which is what Theory’s mother had told her in real life to comfort her. She empowers it, it makes them who they are and has helped them get to where they are.)

The opening scene continues with Kelly attempting to shoot a slingshot as her hearing gets worse, she has trouble concentrating but then shoots. The sound gets muffled once again putting the viewer into her point of view, taking you inside of that feeling for a brief moment. As she is dealing with her hearing issue, zombies begin to approach her, one of which she narrowly escapes due to not being able to hear them behind her. The scene switches point of views from sound to what Kelly barely hears, putting hearing into the forefront, emphasizing the sound differences so viewers get an appreciation of the gravity of being Deaf or Hard of Hearing, especially in this Walking Dead world.

Later on in the show, one of the main characters, Daryl, played by Norman Reedus, enters a scene. He waves over to Connie and signs “Talk later?” to her. This is another great story in the show, the relationship between Daryl and Connie* *(Warning: possible spoilers and content and language not suitable for everyone in the link), which adds to the inclusion and further puts awareness into the spotlight. Their relationship has been highlighted on the show throughout many episodes. Over time it has shown Daryl, and other characters, learning American Sign Language to be able to communicate with Connie and Kelly in their language. Sign language is used so much in so many scenes, as well as communicating through writing and expressions, and emphasizing words when speaking.

Through the episodes, Daryl isn’t always perfect with his signing or expressions, but it shows that he is trying and is determined to learn ASL. In one episode earlier in the season there is a scene that shows a book about learning ASL in his back pocket which some viewers might have missed but was a nice touch by the show. In a recent interview, Reedus spoke about learning sign language, explaining that there have been a few times in which he has messed up some ASL on set where he said a dirty word or two just because of the wrong placement of his hands. It shows that ASL is a skill and artform and every little expression makes a difference. Ridloff also said in a recent interview that all of the cast have been learning ASL, not just for their acting parts but so they can communicate with her and Theory off camera.

Characters in the show who have been with Connie and Kelly for a long time have become fluent in sign language, while the characters who have known her a short time are in various stages of just learning. It shows that we are all able to learn ASL and communicate at anytime, under all different circumstances. The Walking Dead is a show with an especially diverse cast, and it’s great to have them do their part including the Deaf and Hard of Hearing culture now. In a show where so many characters don’t last very long, it’s nice to see these two characters portrayed as strong survivors, which is true to the culture, and it’s refreshing to see them put it into the spotlight often, bringing so much attention and awareness to the mainstream.

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., October 24, 2019 – ASL Concert Interpreter For Beyonce Brings The Passion.

Beyonce is known for putting on a great performance during her concerts. It is hard to upstage her. However, this past week some are saying her American Sign Language ASL concert interpreter gave her a run for her money.

During Atlanta Pride Weekend, ASL interpreter David Cowan shined throughout Beyonce’s set. He started to go viral across the internet with a video of his interpretation of her song “Get Me Bodied”. The passion and energy he puts into his work provides the Deaf and Hard of Hearing attendees with a totally inclusive and exciting experience.

Cowan, who is also deaf, is a seasoned concert and event interpreter. He has been interpreting for Atlanta Pride for 19 years. Over the years he has always brought the energy and enthusiasm of the singers to the stage with him, which elevates the experience for everyone.

This performance is the latest in a string of ASL interpreters making the news with their brilliant interpreting at concerts. Just recently the ASL interpreter for hip hop artist Twista went viral for the incredible speed and passion that she demonstrated while signing for the artist at a Charlotte, North Carolina concert. It was most impressive as Twista holds the Guinness World Record as fastest rapper of all time.

Another recent viral ASL concert story involved a Carrie Underwood fan who’s video of her signing to an Underwood song caught the singers attention. Underwood gave the fan tickets to her Washington DC show and invited her backstage where they performed a song together.

These extraordinary American Sign Language concert interpretations not only do good by creating a better experience for those Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals at each show, but as they make the news they spread awareness and educate, hopefully encouraging those who do not provide interpreters for their events or industries to begin doing so.

Concerts are becoming more accessible for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing population every day. American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters are being provided at these events to create more inclusivity and to bring a better event experience to those who communicate through ASL. There is so much heart, feeling and energy being put into ASL interpreting at these shows that it really brings the concerts to life.

Recently, singer Carrie Underwood happened upon a viral internet video of a 9 year old girl signing along to one of her songs. She was so impressed that she invited the girl and her family to experience her show front row in Washington DC.

Standing front row, the young girl signed along to the songs and did so well that she even impressed the ASL interpreter for the Washington DC show. After the concert, Underwood invited the girl backstage and asked her if she’d like to perform a song together, signing the words as Underwood sang them. Of course she said yes and they put on a great performance together.

Watch them perform the song together and read much more about this story here: https://www.usatoday.com/story/life/parenting/2019/10/07/carrie-underwood-meets-deaf-girl-sign-language-song-interpretation-viral/3896231002/

SAN DIEGO, CALIF., October 4, 2019 – Interpreters In Chicago Are Making Art Accessible.

Accessibility is becoming increasingly available everywhere you go. From concerts, to schools, to healthcare facilities, courts and on. Foreign language interpretation, translation, and American Sign Language (ASL) are being utilized everywhere to assist those Limited English Speakers or Deaf or Hard of Hearing individuals with the daily communication barriers that they face.

One industry that has been increasing their accessibility is the art industry. More and more art galleries and museums are bringing on interpreters to help with tours, talks and events. We have seen it here in San Diego, California and have read stories about the same taking place in New York City, Miami, Florida, Boston, Massachusetts and what seems like every major city in the US.

Now interpreters in Chicago are making art accessible. Chicago, Illinois recently joined in when The Art Institute of Chicago began offering monthly public tours in American Sign Language. ASL interpreters show the artwork on display and have discussions about the pieces for a totally inclusive experience. ASL tours at The Art Institute take place once a month at the moment but they are planning on expanding that to provide greater access to art education for adults and children in Chicago.

To read another story about the ASL tours at The Art Institute of Chicago, and to watch a video where the above blog image originated, visit this link: https://abc7chicago.com/community-events/art-institute-of-chicago-offering-asl-guided-tours-/5357602/

For foreign language interpreters, document translators or American Sign Language in Chicago, San Diego, New York, Miami, Boston and anywhere in between in the United States, contact us to see how we can help with your language needs.
