SAN DIEGO, CALIF., March 9, 2020 – Coronavirus COVID-19 Update.

With the Coronavirus COVID-19 making the news throughout the United States, the IU Group of Companies (Interpreters Unlimited, IU GlobeLink, Accessible Communication for the Deaf (ACD), Albors & Alnet, and Arkansas Spanish Interpreters & Translators (ASIT)) wanted to provide some useful information for those with concerns about the virus. Though the chances of contracting COVID-19 are presently low, we want to make sure we provide the public with the latest information to help keep you safe.

The following are precautions that are taken, and are to be taken, by the independently contracted interpreters who provide their services with us, as well as all IU team members.

It is recommended that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) care guidelines are followed to prevent the spread of most illnesses, including the Coronavirus.

• Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
• The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a face mask. They should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others and by medical personnel.

If you or someone close to you has a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, contact your doctor or hospital in advance and follow any instructions or recommendations that they provide.

Topics include Power, Privilege and Oppression and how these affect Deaf communities. This will be an excellent networking and growth opportunity! Interpreters can share their experiences related to Power, Privilege, and Oppression. Participants can share examples of their experiences, and work on a project. BIO: Patricia (Trix) Bruce, from Seattle, Washington, is known nationwide as both a workshop presenter and an American Sign Language performer. Trix’s work has been warmly received everywhere, from local community centers, to state, regional and national conferences, Deaf Way II, interpreter conventions and more. Wildly popular as a teacher of ASL storytelling and ASL interpretation, Trix impresses audiences at all levels of ASL skill, from novices to fluent experts. Trix has been profoundly deaf since she was 6 months old. She went through oral, mainstreaming, deaf classes, and online educational programs. Trix has been involved in the performing arts since 1980. After completing her college program, she became involved with interpreter training.
